Enjoy the fair...and then audition for Deathtrap

Hello! My name is Grant Stellflug.  I'll be directing Deathtrap at Imagination Theater this fall.  A suspenseful comedy thriller, I've been eager to direct this show ever since I first read it in high school.  Auditions are only a few weeks away and crew members are needed as well to make this production come to life.  Physical, fun, tense and taut, Deathtrap will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Struggling with a bad case of writer's block, Sidney Bruhl (40+) is willing to go to great lengths for his next big hit.  His wife Myra (35+), offers her love and support, but is worried when Sidney devises a plan to invite a student, Clifford (20-30), to their home.  Clifford has written a sure fire smash, and no one else has read it.  No one even knows he's there.  With help from Dutch psychic Helga Ten Dorp (40+) and Lawyer Porter Milgrim (40+), the plot begins to twist and turn, taking you on a journey that leaves you guessing until the very end...

Sound interesting?  Please consider being a part of Deathtrap!

Auditions take place June 22nd from 9am to 12pm with callbacks from 1pm to 3pm

Auditions will consist of COLD READINGS FROM THE SCRIPT.......

I am also looking for backstage help, including props.  Please email me at stellflug311@yahoo.com with questions regarding this!

Thanks for your time, I hope to hear from you and see you on the 22nd.

IT CAST wants YOU!

IT! CAST (Committed Alumni Supporting the Theater) is an alumni group for Imagination Theater participants, past and present.  If you have ever been on stage, painted a set, sewn a costume, moved a piece of furniture, pushed a control room button, or directed others to do so, you are a member!  It is our hope that this group will keep our relationships to the theater and each other strong so that we can support each other in every sense of the word.  Plus, we want to have fun!

Come join us at our quarterly CAST parties (see invitation below) as we stretch our imaginations and cast off our perceived limitations with the help of a supportive and appreciative IT! CAST family. Participate in games, sharpen your skills, stand in the spotlight and deliver something that no one knew you could do. Or, just sit back and enjoy the good company.

The idea behind these events is simple: to re-connect, have fun, meet new people, and display talents. After a run, we always say we should get together again but we seldom do. A new show or activity takes precedence and life gets in the way. You’ve got other friends to hang out with, sure…but deep down you know you long for the kind of fun that is, quite frankly, unique to the theater. We are theater people: we enjoy improv games, put new twists on old songs, love wearing costumes, crave the spotlight, want to be around people who know the words to Broadway showtunes, and crack up when we do really bad accents. It’s fun!  Hope to see you there!

You are cordially invited to
The Summer
IT! CAST* Party
(*Committed Alumni Supporting the Theater)
Imagination Theater
Saturday, June 22nd 6pm-9pm
*
Please bring a finger food, dessert, or beverage to share
Dress as yourself. (Or somebody else…we won’t judge.)

*

All casts, crews, and production teams from all shows at IT! are invited
Significant others, children and parents are also welcome
(members under 14, please bring a parent or responsible older sibling)

Want to get involved?
  • Piano Bar: We have added a sing-a-long Piano Bar to the party festivities!  Jerri will play a set of musical numbers requested by YOU!  Join our Facebook group and submit your song requests.  An official song list will be posted about a week before the party so we can all be prepared (or not, this is informal).
  • Improv/Theater Games: Join the fun with Who’s Line Is It Anyway’s style performances.  Please plan to attend one of two rehearsals/logistics coordinations prior to the party so we’re ready for an audience!  Rehearsals are Wednesday June 19, 10-11am OR 6-7pm at Kate's house in Camino.  RSVP to Kate at the CAST email below for directions.
  • Bartending: We are looking for adult volunteers to take shifts tending the beer/wine bar.  You will be asked to open and pour the wine, as well as ID anyone under 30 and monitor the bar area.
  • Talent Presentation: If you want to prepare a solo or group presentation for your peers, please contact Michelle ASAP at the CAST email below, and plan to provide any accompaniment you may need. The sound system, a keyboard and mics will be provided, please contact Marc and/or Sean with technical concerns.  Though not necessary, if you are interested in borrowing props and/or costumes, please contact us ahead of time to arrange a meeting at the theater.
The program will be pre-arranged on a first come first served basis, so reply as soon as possible
We hope to see you there, but if you can’t make it this time, please know that there will be more IT! CAST Parties in the not-so-distant future. If you prefer not to be contacted in the future, simply let us know and we’ll remove you from our list. Whatever your preferences, please pass this invitation on to anyone in your cast/crew who may not have been contacted due to email address changes, etc. We don’t want to leave anyone out!

Deathtrap Auditions at Imagination Theater June 22

Imagination Theater! is pleased to announce auditions for Deathtrap on Saturday, June 22 from 9:00 a.m. to noon with call backs that afternoon. Grant Stellflug is directing this suspenseful thriller. It is an ensemble of three men and two women ages 20 and older.

Seemingly comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a dry spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. Sidney's plan, which he devises with his wife, is to to offer collaboration to the student, an idea the young man quickly accepts. From there the suspense mounts steadily as the plot begins to twist and turn. The right amount of thrills, chills, and laughter combine for a fantastic theater experience on all levels.

The show is scheduled September 6-29, 2013. For additional information, go to the theater webpage, blog, Facebook page, or contact Grant Stellflug, the director, at stellflug311@yahoo.com.

Deathtrap Audition Information (Character Synopsis)

Deathtrap ran on Broadway for four years, holding the record for the longest run by a comedy-thriller. It is the best known play written by Ira Levin, who is known to many as the author of the novels "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Stepford Wives."  Auditions are June 22 at 9:00 a.m.

Setting: The Bruhl home.  Westport Connecticut, October, 1978

Character Synopsis:

Sidney Bruhl 40+
A writer, Sidney has made his living off creating several Broadway hits. He is charming, smart, cynical, pompous, perhaps a little underhanded, indeed all traits needed in a man whose job is to create a good thriller. Sidney has a plan to carry out, and will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

Myra Bruhl 35+
Myra is a loving wife of 11 years who enjoys her life and home with Sidney. She is attractive, spiritual, kind, and naive. She wants what is best for her and Sidney, and to maintain their current lifestyle as best they can.

Clifford Anderson 20 -30
A student at a nearby college, Clifford is a blossoming writer; young, athletic, and handsome. He has been asked to the Bruhl home and is in awe of Sidney, his mentor, as well as the possibilities of his current situation.

Helga Ten Dorp 40+
(could be younger, makeup possible, depends on actress) A dutch psychic. Provides a bit of comic relief. She has been plagued by a lifetime of images and visions. Frazzled at times, Helga visits the Bruhl home occasionally, as she is a guest at a home down the street.

Porter Milgrim 40+
Sidney and Myra's attorney and good friend. He is logical and straightforward. Attentive to detail, Porter helps the Bruhl's keep track of their legal matters.

Old West Trio Benefit Concert - Friday March 8

Thank you for your support of live, community theater in Placerville and El Dorado County.  To keep our theater thriving, we have a benefit concert with the Old West Trio, scheduled this Friday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m.  Seating is reserved and tickets are available for $15.

"These guys make me want to hit the dusty trail and ride off into the setting sun. Leave the rat race behind with "Ridin' Back to Yesterday" or get lost in an Autry movie with "I Want to Live Out West." Gaze into the crimson glow of a campfire after a hard day on the trail with "Prairie Nights." It's nice to know there is new Western music still being written." says The Lone Prairie Rider.

The Old West Trio is a western music group composed of Steve Ide (rhythm guitar), Steve Johnson (lead guitar), and Leslie Ide (upright bass).  They are members of the Western Music Association and co-founders of Scofield's Cowboy Campfire at the Red Mule Ranch.  Expect to hear some amazing cowboy songs.  Find a sample here: http://www.oldwesttrio.com/music.php

Also slated to perform is McAvoy Layne preserving the wit & wisdom of "The Wild Humorist of the Pacific Slope," Mark Twain.  McAvoy is the ghost of Samuel Clemens in A&E's biography of Mark Twain, and in the Discovery Channel's Cronkite Award winning documentary, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.  He is a winner of the Nevada award for excellence in school and library service, and author of a soon to be published memoir, Becoming Mark Twain.

Whether or not you are able to join us for this event, we hope you will continue to support YOUR local, community theater.  We would not be here with out YOU!

Thank You,

Meet IT's "Run for Your Wife" Cast

Grant Stellflug (John Smith) - A veteran IT! performer and long time Placerville resident, Grant’s most recent involvement was Assistant Director for Camelot. Prior to that he has been seen on stage as The Dentist in Little Shop of Horrors, Owen in The Foreigner, and Vince Fontaine in Grease. Grants upcoming projects include directing Deathtrap, later in IT!’s 2013 season. He is very excited to be a part of such a wonderful cast and crew who have put in many hours of hard work bringing this play to life.

Jody Wills (Mary Smith) - Jody is thrilled to be performing again at IT.   She was last seen at IT! as Mammy Yokum in Li'l Abner.  She is excited to be working again with Lanny Langston who also directed her in Lil’ Abner.  She has performed locally for over 30 years and has many roles under her belt; her favorite shows include A Few Good Men (Lt. Ross), Quilters (Ensemble), Li'l Abner (Mammy Yokum), A Couple of White Chicks Sitting Around Talking (Maude), Cabaret (Freulein Kost) and The Odd Couple (Gwendolyn Pigeon). When she's not on the stage, Jody works as an administrative assistant for a nationwide association, hikes tall mountains and is Nana to five grandchildren (with one more on the way).  Jody thanks IT! for welcoming her back and a HUGE thank you to her family and friends for all their love and support.

Kathleen Mini (Barbara Smith) - Kathleen followed in her daughter’s footsteps to their first audition together for the Imagination Theater Musical, Lil’ Abner. Since that time, she has gone on to perform in several other IT productions. She was Glinda in the Wizard of Oz, Babette in Beauty and the the Beast, Mrs Van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank, and Mrs. Banks in Father of the Bride. Most recently Kathleen was challenged by “attempting” to tap dance in White Christmas. She looks forward to performing as Barbara Smith in Run for your Wife.

Chris Celestin (Stanley Gardener) - Chris, age 19, has been involved in theater for the last 5 years. He is happy to be returning to the IT! stage after playing Dickon in The Secret Garden. Some of his favorite roles include Lancelot (IT’s Camelot), and his hangwon debut a s Eddie Marinara in the Carsino Show! When Chris is not on stage he enjoys pretending he is on stage, dancing wherever he sees fit. He also enjoys pina coladas and getting caught in the rain. Chris would like to thank his parents for their undying support and encouragement.

Marc Bonham (Detective Sgt. Troughton) - Marc has been performing for local audiences off and on for the past eight years. This includes choir, drama, marching band, glee club in high school and college. Marc’s love for community theater started later in life after his first IT! performance in 2005. He performed in Lil’ Abner and most recently, The Secret Garden. Marc would like to thank his wife and children for their love and support of his hobby.

Sean Conley-Widing (Detective Sgt. Porterhouse) - Sean has been interested in theater for a long time and helped with lights and set construction in Sacramento. While assisting with an IT!’s fundraiser, he was approached to play a knight in Camelot . Sean joined the chorus, had a few lines, and even a small solo during “Fie on Goodness.” He continued to assist IT! with light and sound and auditioned for Run for Your Wife, This is his first time on stage as part of an ensemble cast and he looks forward to having a good time bringing laughter to the audience.

Richard “Rick” Gaylord (Bobby Franklin) - A telecommunications technician by trade, Rick has performed leading roles in more than ten of 45+ plays since 1980. Rick’s favorite role was Charlie in Theatre El Dorado’s The Foreigner (1997) and more recent roles Froggy in IT’s The Foreigner (2010), Greater Tuna, Godspell, Big River, Music Man, and A Christmas Carol. Rick is proud to be the first recipient of IT’s Rodney Roberts Theater Achievement Award.

Gordon Prow (Newspaper Photographer/Stage Manager) - Gordon is very excited about stage managing this fun farce. He last stage managed IT”s 2010 production of Bram Stoker’s Dracula along with his wife, Sandra. His first stage appearance at Imagination Theater was playing the Nazi general in The Sound of Music. Gordon hopes that you enjoy this show. He thanks his friends and family in supporting his endeavors at Imagination Theater.

The Audience Speaks! Run for Your Wife, a FUN farce not to be missed!

"How Dare You. . ." says Stanley Gardner (Chris Celestin)
Last evening was our first visit to your theater (all the way up the hill from Rancho Cordova) and we brought two friends from El Dorado … they needed some laughs … they needed to escape real life for a couple of hours …. And our hearts overflowed as we heard and watched them thoroughly enjoy your show (along with both of us !!)

Carolyn and I enjoyed many plays at the old Stage Door Theater Comedy Playhouse near Arden Fair years ago – Laura Darzell (owner) is still a dear friend we visit occasionally. We saw Run For Your Wife there several times in the 80’s .. Dave Williams (KCRA) played John in those daze …. And we have always placed it as one of the funniest, most complicated, creative, confusing, dysfunctional plays we’ve enjoyed.

Your version is excellent … fun … very delightfully presented … excellent stage set …. precise directing … and actors …. You each did super !!!!! Physical and verbal timing was great …. We’d forgotten some of the details so it was really fun being “surprised” by a twist or two or three (We are getting older). Our friends left laughing … sharing the surprises … and want to come back for more …. And we happily revisited many of the twists on our drive back down the hill.

Thanks for everyone’s hard work …. We know it takes more than the folks on stage to deliver a high quality production.

Thanks again … keep laughing and having fun with this one !!!

Cordially

John & Carolyn W.

A Few More Comments about the Les Miserables Auditions

Or, Remember that this show is really an opera so singing is what really counts!

As you select your audition song, here some things to keep in mind…
1. Select a song for your audition that you are very comfortable with and can sing well. The audition panel will primarily be evaluating your singing based on your ability to stay on pitch, your accuracy with the melody, and your ability to project.

2. Since Les Miserables is a sing-through type of show that depends mostly on accurate singing to be a success, your characterization and movement as part of your Les Miserables audition singing is less important than when auditioning for other musicals. In other words, during the Les Miserables auditions, the singing is most important. Don’t spend a lot of energy on characterization and movement as you prepare your audition song. Avoid the trap of attempting to “copy” any performance or characterization you may have already heard or seen. The audition panel will mostly be looking for you to simply sing well and confidently.

3. Even if you want to be considered for more than one of the lead roles you only need to prepare one song from the show. The panel will be able to listen to you sing one song sung by a particular character and determine if you are suitable for other roles as well.

4. We are producing our own show based only upon the script and music we have been provided. Auditioners, and those ultimately cast in show, need to remember that we do not need to spend a lot of energy comparing the various anniversary performances, student productions, original cast albums, karaoke versions of the show, etc. with each other. Of all of these productions, there is not a particular one that is “the right one.” There are only versions that someone may be more familiar with than others. Our production will result from our collective talents and artistic sensibilities, the skills of our orchestra and performers, and the abilities and dedication of our entire creative team.

Enjoy dreaming the dream!

BOOK OF MORMON Auditions coming to Sacramento

I am writing to let you know that THE BOOK OF MORMON will be coming to

Sacramento to hold auditions February 8th and 9th by appointment only.

We are looking to build our files for future replacements for all

three companies (Broadway, 1st National Tour, Jumamosi Tour) for the

roles of ARNOLD CUNNINGHAM, KEVIN PRICE, NABALUGI and ELDER MCKINLEY

etc. (See role descriptions below.) We realize that the area has some

fantastic musical and comedy talent, and even though we have some

appointments already scheduled we want to make sure that we are not

missing anyone, and felt that it is important to reach out to the

local theatres, universities and improv groups to make sure no one is

robbed of the opportunity to submit themselves for consideration. We

appreciate you passing this on to anyone you feel might be right. Or

if you have an email list, doing a blast to make actors aware.

Anyone interested in auditioning for any or all of these companies

should submit a picture and resume and any additional materials to

jrichcasting@gmail.com by 5PM Thursday, February 7th 2013. Please

make sure you put the City Name of the audition in the subject line.

Due to the amount of emails we receive, we may not be able to respond

to every submission. Please note that submitting does not guarantee

an appointment. Both Equity and Non Equity should submit.
